CERNOBBIO / ITALY
ITALIAN GRAND PRIX
21  - 23 SEPTEMBER
Cernobbio is one of the beautiful old towns that line Lake Como. Narrow streets and quaint houses in shades of pink, terracotta, gold and cream stucco delight travelers who visit here, and the elegant shops, picturesque cafes and restaurants and the ancient church are well worth seeing.

Cernobbio is just a short drive from Milan, was the setting for the movie “A Month by the Lake”, and is surrounded by stunning lake side villas, of which many are owned by international film stars like George Clooney, or by Italian business tycoons.

Taking the public steamer is a good way to view the villas, as well as to visit some of the other towns on Lake Como. You can also hire private boats, which are able to get closer to shore, as well as boasting knowledgeable guides who will relate tons of history and other information about Cernobbio and the surrounding area.

The Villa d'Este, a stunning and luxurious hotel which used to be a cardinal’s palace, boasts rooms which are almost like museums with their abundance of art. There are also extensive and beautifully landscaped gardens. The garden is private, however, so unless you stay here, you will not be able to view its beauties. The Villa does have one visible claim to fame, and that is the floating swimming pool, the only one is all Italy. The rectangular pool juts out from the shore and seems to literally float on the lake.

Lake Como is surrounded by the Alps, which seem to rise directly from the beautiful blue waters. Mount Bisbino looms 4350 feet above the town of Cernobbio. There is hiking in the area, although driving to the summit is easier, and worth the trip. To see Cernobbio spreading across the hill beneath, the tranquil lake beyond, and the Swiss Alps in the distance is just spectacular.

Because Lake Como is a mountain lake, and not the sea, the beaches here are not the wide, white sand beaches some people expect. A few of the hotels do have beaches, but they are mostly shingle. Swimming is popular, though, as are wind surfing and sun-bathing.

LAKE COMO

Italy's Lake Como (Lago di Como in Italian and also known as Lario), sits in the foothills of the Alps, has an area of 146 km², making it the third largest lake in Italy, after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore. At over 400 m (1320 ft) deep it is one of the deepest lakes in Europe and the bottom of the lake is more than 200 metres (656 ft) below sea-level.

Just a short drive from Milan - the contrast between the hustle and bustle of the city and the serene tranquility of the lake could not be more striking.

The area boasts impressive scenery, with mountains rolling down to the water’s edge, and while the summer months are hot it is often still possible to see snow on the peaks of the mountains across the lake.

The lake has long been a popular destination for Italians escaping the heat of the cities, and as a result there are many historic and beautiful villas lining the shores, such as the Villa Carlotta and the Villa D'Este, as well as many larger villas that have in recent years been converted into luxury hotels.

The area's beauty has earned it a reputation amongst the stars, with Como being used as a location for the recent James Bond film, Casino Royale, and with a number of celebrities choosing to make Como their second (or fifth or sixth..) home.

While just about every town on the lake side has its charms, some of the most spectacular views are to be found near the middle of the lake, between Tremezzo, Mennagio, Bellagio and Varenna where the sheer scale of the area, from the depth of the lake to the height of the mountains around, can be seen.
